Uncle Armand and the Mass

This is how I remember my brother in law, with a smile and a deep affection for family. So I was at mass today and remembered him with a smile. Why? Because changes in the way mass had been said for so many post Vatican years irritated him immensely. Perhaps he wasn’t a theologian, but he knew his religion. It doesn’t matter that he avoided the new mass. There were things wrong with it, things most of the people in the pew adjusted to or ignored. After all, the Church makes decisions on liturgy. Yet Armand complained fiercely over loose translations; wordings that would possibly even invalidate the mass. His largest concern was the rewording of the consecration.

Here are both the old loose translation and the new accurate translation (from Latin, of course). Perhaps they do not seem too different to you; but just “This is the Lamb of God” is a statement and “Behold the Lamb of God” is a command, the differences in the wording of the consecration is very large.

Thank you Armand! The sensus fidelium has won.

Take this, all of you, and eat it;
this is my body which will be given up for you.
Take this, all of you, and drink from it;
this is the cup of my blood, the blood of the new and everlasting covenant.
It will be shed for you and for all so that sins may be forgiven.
Do this in memory of me.

TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND EAT OF IT,
FOR THIS IS MY BODY,
WHICH WILL BE GIVEN UP FOR YOU.
TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND DRINK FROM IT,
FOR THIS IS THE CHALICE OF MY BLOOD,
THE BLOOD OF THE NEW AND ETERNAL COVENANT,
WHICH WILL BE POURED OUT FOR YOU AND FOR MANY
FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS.
DO THIS IN MEMORY OF ME.

Christmas is over; Get Ready for Lent

How the Apostles Died

1.
MatthewSuffered martyrdom in Ethiopia; killed by a sword wound.

2.     MarkDied in Alexandria, Egypt, after being dragged by Horses through the streets until he was dead.

3.     LukeWas hanged in Greece as a result of his tremendous Preaching to the lost.

4.     JohnFaced martyrdom when he was boiled in huge Basin of boiling oil during a wave of persecution In Rome. However, he was miraculously delivered from death.
John was then sentenced to the mines on the prison Island of Patmos. He wrote his prophetic Book of Revelation on Patmos. The apostle John was later freed and returned to serve As Bishop of Edessa in modern Turkey. He died as an old man, the only apostle to die peacefully.

5.     PeterHe was crucified upside down on an x-shaped cross. According to church tradition it was because he told his tormentors that he felt unworthy to die In the same way that Jesus Christ had died.

6.     James: The leader of the church in Jerusalem was thrown over a hundred feet down from the southeast pinnacle of the Temple when he refused to deny his faith in Christ. When they discovered that he survived the fall, his enemies beat James to death with a fuller's club.
* This was the same pinnacle where Satan had taken Jesus during the Temptation.

7.     James the Great: Son of Zebedee, was a fisherman by trade when Jesus Called him to a lifetime of ministry. As a strong leader of the church, James was ultimately beheaded at Jerusalem. The Roman officer who guarded James watched amazed as James defended his faith at his trial. Later, the officer walked beside James to the place of execution. Overcome by conviction, he declared his new faith to the judge and Knelt beside James to accept beheading as a Christian.

8.     Bartholomew: Also known as Nathaniel Was a missionary to Asia. He witnessed for our Lord in present day Turkey. Bartholomew was martyred for his preaching in Armenia where he was flayed to death by a whip.

9.     Andrew: Was crucified on an x-shaped cross in Patras, Greece. After being whipped severely by seven soldiers they tied his body to the cross with cords to prolong his agony. His followers reported that, when he was led toward the cross, Andrew saluted it in these words: 'I have long desired and expected this happy hour. The cross has been consecrated by the body of Christ hanging on it.' He continued to preach to his tormentors for two days until he expired.

10.   Thomas: Was stabbed with a spear in India during one of his missionary trips to establish the church in the Sub-continent.

11.   Jude: Was killed with arrows when he refused to deny his faith in Christ.

12.   Matthias: The apostle chosen to replace the traitor Judas Iscariot, was stoned and then beheaded.

13.   Paul: Was tortured and then beheaded by the evil Emperor Nero at Rome in A.D. 67. Paul endured a lengthy imprisonment, which allowed him to write his many epistles to the churches he had formed throughout the Roman Empire. These letters, which taught many of the foundational Doctrines of Christianity, form a large portion of the New Testament.

Perhaps this is a reminder to us that our sufferings here are indeed minor compared To the intense persecution and cold cruelty faced by the apostles and disciples during their times for the sake of the Faith.
And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake:
{But he that endureth to the end shall be saved} Matthew

Faith is not believing that God can,
It is knowing that God WILL!"

The Death of Jesus
For the next 60 seconds set aside whatever you're doing and take this opportunity! Let's see if Satan Can stop this.

THE (SCIENTIFIC) DEATH OF JESUS
At the age of 33, Jesus was condemned to death. At the time Crucifixion was the "worst" death. Only the worst criminals were condemned to be crucified. Yet it was even more dreadful for Jesus, unlike other criminals, condemned to death by Crucifixion, Jesus was to be nailed to the Cross by His hands and feet.

Each nail Was 6 to 8 inches long. The nails were driven into His wrist -Not into His palms as is commonly portrayed-. There's a tendon in the wrist that extends to the shoulder. The Roman guards knew that when the nails were being hammered into the wrist that tendon would tear and break, forcing Jesus to use His back muscles to support himself so that He could Breath
Both of His feet were nailed together. Thus, He was forced to support Himself on the single nail that impaled His feet to the cross. Jesus could not support himself with His legs because of the pain So He was forced to alternate between arching His back and using his legs, just to continue to breathe. Imagine the struggle, the pain, the suffering and the courage.  Jesus endured this Reality for over 3 hours. Yes, over 3 hours!  Can you imagine this kind of suffering?

A few minutes before He died, Jesus stopped bleeding. He was simply pouring water from his wounds. From common images we see wounds to His hands and feet and even the spear wound to His side... But do we realize His wounds were actually made in his body?
A hammer driving large nails through the wrist, the feet overlapped and an even large nail hammered through the arches, then a Roman guard piercing His side with a spear. But before the nails and the spear Jesus was whipped and beaten. The whipping was so severe that it tore the flesh from His body.

The beating was so horrific that His Face was torn and his beard ripped from His face. The Crown of thorns cut deeply into His scalp. Most men would not have survived this torture". He had no more blood to bleed out; only water poured from His wounds. The human adult body contains about 3.5 liters (just less than a gallon) of blood. Jesus poured all 3.5 Liters of his blood; He had three nails hammered into His members; a crown of thorns on His head and, beyond that, a Roman soldier who stabbed a spear into His chest.  All these, without mentioning the humiliation He suffered after carrying His own Cross for almost 2 kilometers, while the crowd spat in His face and threw stones (the cross was almost 30 kg of weight, only for its higher part, where His hands were Nailed). Jesus had to endure this experience, to open the Gates of Heaven, so that you can have free access to God; so that your sins could be "washed" away. All of them, with no exception!

Don't ignore this situation.  JESUS CHRIST DIED FOR YOU!

It is easy to pass jokes or foolish photos by e-mail, but when it comes to God, sometimes you feel ashamed to forward to others, because you are worried of what they may think about you. God has plans for you. Show all your friends what He experienced to save you. Now think about this! May God bless your Life!

60 Seconds with God... For the next 60 Seconds, set aside what you're doing and take this opportunity! Let's see if Satan can stop This. All you have to do is:

1. Simply Pray for the person who sent this message to you.
2. Then, send this Message to people.. the more the better.
3. People will pray for you and you will make that many people pray to God for others.
4. Take a Moment to appreciate the power of God in your life, for doing what pleases Him.

If you are not ashamed to do this, please, follow Jesus' instructions. He said (Matthew 10:32 & 33):
"Everyone therefore who acknowledges me before others, I also will acknowledge before My Father in heaven; but whosoever denies Me before others, I also will deny before My Father in heaven".

A Rosary for St. Joseph

The Rosary is a wonderful meditation on the life of Christ. It takes us through the joyful mysteries of his announcement and birth, to sorrowful thoughts of his passion, and finishes with glorious reflections on resurrection and heaven.
Recently, Luminous Mysteries have been added. These include the Baptism of Jesus, The Wedding at Cana, the Proclamation of the Gospel, the Transfiguration, and the Eucharist.

Jesus and Mary rightly deserve to be the primary focus of the Rosary. Yet, in this day and age, when so many families are fragmented for various reasons, it might be appropriate to include the Holy Family’s hidden years—thirty of them. To do this it might be helpful to reflect on the patriarch of the family, the man who is husband, father, breadwinner, and protector. Like so many husbands and fathers, strength of virtue embraces tenderness, courage, and lots of hard work. If the Holy Family was strong, it is because Joseph was strong.

Here then are some ideas that form a new series of mysteries of the Rosary that honor St. Joseph.

First Mystery: Joseph is betrothed to Mary
A young man falls in love with a beautiful virgin. He is engaged in the traditional Hebrew ceremony, which lasts a week or more. Joy is balanced against obedience—an established man betrothed to a young virgin who had vowed herself to God. The loveliest woman on earth is ready to share her perfect chastity with an equally chaste spouse.

Second Mystery: Joseph takes Mary into his home
Picture the delighted husband carrying his wife across the threshold. Fear about the child that is not his is now gone, thanks to the angel's message. Joseph joyfully shares his warm home, his carpenter shop, his dreams for the future with his pregnant Mary ready to protect and provide.

Third Mystery: Joseph Starts a New Life
The man faithful to the law endures the terrors in Bethlehem. Equally faithful to the call of God, he flees into Egypt. Like so many men who have to change jobs or job locations, Joseph must bring his little family to a strange land with a strange language and re-start his carpentry business, changing the styles to fit his Egyptian customers. In those early years he must protect Mary and Jesus and help them adjust to being away from home.

Fourth Mystery: Joseph Brings his Family to Nazareth
Think of the joy the Holy Family experiences in coming home to settle in Nazareth. The little carpenter shop soon is not just a workshop, it is a school where Jesus learns his father’s trade. There Mary, now safely among family can cook, keep house, tend her garden, and make clothes for her two charges. What delight to spend many years in the company of so virtuous a man as Joseph.

Fifth Mystery: Joseph Dies in the Arms of Jesus and Mary
According to tradition, Joseph was not present at the crucifixion. Instead, before those terrible days arrived, he died peacefully with Jesus and Mary at his side, thus becoming the Patron of a Happy Death. Let us reflect on the peace and joy of dying in the arms of Jesus and Mary.

White Christmas

White Christmas, starring Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye, warms the hearts of all who watch annual Christmas specials. Sitting on their favorite easy chair in their cozy living room, they can romanticize all they want. But do they really crave a white Christmas? Or are their White Christmas dreams just a fantasy?
Old timers are often called snow birds, not because they fly north to enjoy a White Christmas, but because they head south for warmer conditions. Arthritic joints like it hot, while unstable old legs seek less slippery sidewalks. They look for a holiday where they can take a walk in the park without wearing heavy coats or boots.
If you had spent your first 20 years of life above 40 degrees of latitude, you might have a gentle view of snow. Munich, my hometown, is above the 48th parallel. That translates into seasons that include a healthy sprinkling of snow in winter. Most people know the downside of winter, i.e. avalanches, white-outs, ice storms, black ice, and icicles—big ones that kill. There are power outages, and falling trees and power lines, not to mention frostbite. Even I can remember walking home in the snow with my toes nearly falling off and then bracing for the bite of them warming up painfully. Those who have grown up in snowy conditions know to dress, how to stay indoors, and how to rev up the generator. They’ve learned to survive in conditions fit for an Eskimo. A wintry trip to Wisconsin renewed memories:

Soft sheets furrowed white
Diamond sparkles in light.
Sugar coated red pines
Iced branches and lines
Snow-angels, snowballs
Ice skating and fun falls

Comet Lovejoy Still Bright

Comet Lovejoy continues to burn. Currently in the Corona Borealis it is dimming from its earlier appearance in Leo. Nevertheless, the comet is still fun to follow as he moves through the different star fields. Today's ephemeris are:RA 16 05 08 and the Declination is +34 41 55
What do the numbers mean? RA stands for Right Ascension. That designation refers to longitudinal lines superimposed on the sky. In other words, the numbers given are written in hours, minutes and seconds.
Yes, you've guessed right--Declination is equivalent to latitude and is written in degrees. The listed positions puts the comet squarely between  Kappa and Tau, the two stars on the upper border of the Corona. Both stars shine at nearly 5th magnitude.  The comet itself is dimmer. If you would like to follow the ephemeris which are calculated cometary orbits here is the link:

Here's a page of Edmund's Mag 6 Star chart. It shows the RA and Dec. The pencil marks are the comet's position as seen two days ago.

COMET LOVEJOY

Comet Lovejoy now is at the naked-eye limit and getting brighter while Comet ISON struggles to become a binocular object. In this telescopic image, taken at 4:03 a.m. Sunday from Stagecoach, Comet Lovejoy sports a faint yellowish dust tail and a glowing green coma. Both comets should continue to brighten through November in our predawn sky.
http://www.steamboattoday.com/news/2013/nov/11/comet-lovejoy-upstages-ison/

Lately many crystal clear nights have dazzled this amateur astronomer. Out in the wee morning hours (3 am through 5 am), the sky is studded with jewels.  The hunt for Comet ISON, expected to become naked eye within a week, goes on. One would think that a 10 x 50 binocular would haul it in. But no, the Virgo field of stars still cradles empty space. With such nightly disappointments over the proclaimed “comet of the century” amateurs like me happily stare at other things in the sky; for example, M-81 and M-82 or a quick sweep of Mars and Jupiter with its tiny moons. A satellite, a meteorite, a bolide now and then, like the one that streaked across the dipper last night, pumps the adrenaline.

Of course, other comets are in the sky in the pre-dawn hours.

Encke and Lovejoy are up. My search of posted internet locations, as well as a look at my Edmund Mag-6 maps fixed the coordinates in my mind. According to reports, 3 am Pacific Time, since I live in Southern California, would be ideal for getting out under the stars.

Bingo! High in the sky just north of the sickle of Leo’s head, Lovejoy makes its appearance. No longer crushed by ISON’s poor showing, Lovejoy has stolen my astronomer’s heart. Bright as the Andromeda galaxy in my 10 x 50 Celestial Innovations Binocular with its 6.5 degree field, Comet Lovejoy kept me up through 5 am. Of course it’s rounder than the galaxy, has a brighter head and bulges slightly right, it's tail? Here's the best image as I saw it.
So get out your binoculars!

This site shows both ISON and Lovejoy in time lapse video. Although ISON needs telescopic capability, Lovejoy puts on an almost naked eye show.
