  1. Dear Eva,
First of all, let me introduce myself.
My name is John Madatian. I just read and LOVED your book Kanon!!!!!!!!!!

I am a retired professional pianist, age 62, and now work as a Gestalt Pracitioner, and pastoral counsellor. I am married to Beth O'Connor (an Irish Catholic, of course) and we have no children, and have devoted our 34 years together, to the service of others. Ara Sevanian was a frequent visitor to my family's home in SF, when I was child studying at the SF Conservatory. Anyway, more later, if you are interested.

Now, a GIGANTIC THANK YOU, for your extraordinary book, Kanon.
It shed HUGE light and filled in many questions about my family's history.
My father (Ashot Madatian) and Ara, were very close friends, and worked together for years, at Avedik's Market (aka Ara's Market in SF, and were POW's together in WW2, as soldiers from then, Soviet Armenia. My father and mother were Armenian refugees, who met at the Stuttgart Armenian DP Camp, and came to the USA at the same time Ara arrived.

I have a big favor to ask of it, and I don't even know if it is possible, but "ask and ye MIGHT receive" in this case. So here goes:

On page 9 of your book, there is a handwritten letter (in Russian) to Ara from Aram Khachaturian. I can read Russian, but sadly (for me), the letter is partially covered with an overlay of a photograph of the Sevanian family. If there is any chance, you still have a copy of Khachaturian's letter, I would LOVE to read the entire letter.

If you do, and would be willing to go to the trouble of faxing, emailing, sending, whatever is easiest for you, I would be most grateful, and happy to compensate you for the costs of doing so.

In any case, here is my info:
    email: ohanes@earthlink.net
    Fax: 650-728-7830
    Phone: 650-728-7838
Address: PO Box371519, Montara, CA, 94037

I live about 20 minutes south of San Francisco.
My mother is nearly 90 years old, and still living, and has wonderful memories and stories about the "Ara Sevanian" days.

Please let me know, if you are able, and in any case, I will understand, still my greatest and deepest appreciation for all the excruciating work it took to put that book together as artfully and accurately as you did. Bravo Eva!

I wish you and yours the very best,

    With gratitude,

    John Madatian

P.S. Please feel free to contact me for any reason, other than my request.
