January 16,2012
We lay in bed together staring at the ceiling of our one bedroom 187th Street Bronx, N. Y. apartment. Mom and I talked about the future. I was 12 and bubbled with hopes of owning a little cabin and a little horse on a little acre of land. Soon, babysitting money went to riding lessons. Unlike the wild west, you can’t touch a horse without tons of equitation lessons. They didn’t fulfill my dream.

Of course, the reality has its drawbacks:
*An acre is a lot of land to keep up.
(Turning a muddy slope into outdoor living space is costly and harsh)
*Cabins, even dome style, tend to be undesirable by any standards
(I mean how do I get loans for fix it jobs?)
*Horses stink, eat up a good portion of your budget, and are dangerous.
(You muck twice a day, buy lots of hay, and have to watch your back!)
My sweetheart who made the dream come true had his misgivings:
“Why are your fingernails always crusted with mud?”
“I’m sick of tightening my belt because we can’t get a loan!”
“Hey, teach your horse manners—she just bit me!”

But, it’s heaven.
